The FACTS
First DMA Fine: €890 Million for Self-Preferencing
On July 23, the European Commission imposed fines on Google totaling €890 million: €460M for Search and €430M for Google Play. Google is accused of favoring its own services in shopping, hotels, transportation, and sports. It has 60 days to comply, or it risks penalties of up to 5% of global daily turnover.
The key difference from previous fines: the DMA requires compliance in weeks, not years.
Nearly 300 French Newspapers File a Complaint Over AI Overviews
On August 11, APIG filed a complaint with France’s competition authority, arguing that Google launched AI Overviews in France without publishers’ consent and in breach of the 2022 compensation agreement. It also claims that AI Overviews further reduce traffic to media outlets.
The case is based on a specific existing agreement, creating a potential precedent for other European markets as well.
August 2026 Spam Update: The Third of the Year
On August 18, Google announced the third spam update of 2026, globally and across all languages. There are no new policies: the detection systems are being upgraded for practices such as scaled content abuse, doorway pages, cloaking, and manipulated links.
Three updates in eight months make it harder to attribute a drop to a single specific cause. If a site was impacted, content and the link profile are the first areas to review.
Google Adds AI Buttons to the Homepage
On August 10, Google confirmed a desktop test with three buttons under the search box: create images, ask about files, and brainstorm, all providing direct entry into AI Mode.
For a homepage that has remained almost the same for 25 years, the change is a clear signal that Google wants to drive more traffic to AI Mode.
Nick Fox: Billions of AI Clicks per Week
The head of Google Search, Nick Fox, said that Search’s AI features send billions of clicks to websites each week and that Search overall sends billions of clicks daily.
What’s missing is a baseline for comparison, a YoY change, or a publisher-level breakdown. For a business, the critical metric remains how much traffic its own site gets for its own queries.
Official Preferred Sources Button
Google added guidelines for a custom button that allows a site’s visitors to set it as a Preferred Source. This way, the source may appear more frequently and with a badge in Search, Discover, and News.
It’s one of the few official, immediately actionable tasks in the era of AI Search, especially on newsletter pages, author pages, and popular articles.
Search Console: Instagram, TikTok, X and YouTube
As of July 7, the new platform properties in Search Console allow measuring content performance from Instagram, TikTok, X, and YouTube within Google Search and Discover, including clicks, impressions, queries, and top posts.
Google Images: Pinterest-Style Logic and AI Image Generation
On July 14, Google announced a new Images interface with greater emphasis on visual discovery, as well as built-in image generation in AI Overviews via Nano Banana.
The direction is clear: more inspiration happens inside Google and less on Pinterest or TikTok.
Shared Crawl Budget for All Google Bots
Google clarified that each site starts with the same conservative crawl capacity and that the limit increases only when there is demand and the site remains technically healthy. At the same time, capacity is shared across all Google crawlers.
So a big brand doesn’t automatically get a larger crawl budget, while increased activity from one crawler can reduce capacity for the others. Response times, 5xx, and crawl logs become even more important.
Cloudflare: Controlling AI Bots by Purpose
As of July 1, Cloudflare customers can manage AI bots separately for Search, Agent, and Training. As of September 15, on new domains, Training and Agent bots will be blocked by default on pages with ads.
This isn’t just a technical setting: the choice directly affects future visibility and traffic.
Google Indexed Private Claude Conversations
In late July, shared Claude conversations appeared on Google, Bing, and other engines. The reason was that Claude’s public URLs did not include noindex or robots directives.
The same pattern appeared with shared ChatGPT conversations: anything publicly accessible needs explicit mechanisms to prevent indexing.
ChatGPT Ads in 31 European Countries
OpenAI is expanding ChatGPT Ads to 31 European countries. Ads appear only in the Free and Go plans.
At the same time, SE Ranking measured ads in 25.94% of commercial prompts, while Emarketer forecasts a chatbot ads market of $5.41B in the U.S. by 2030. For media plans, the logic remains experimentation with clear limits and measurement of incrementality.
The STATS
47.7%: AI Mode Citations Are Paragraph Highlights
A study of 15.7M citations across 148 industries found that 47.7% lead directly to a specific point on a page via scroll-to-text highlight.
So, instead of many thin pages around variations of the same question, a clear, self-contained paragraph that answers directly is more valuable.
+197%: Shopify’s AI Referrals Are Rising, but Organic Remains Larger
AI-referred sessions to Shopify merchants increased 197% YoY in Q2, while organic search traffic rose 12%. AI sessions and orders nearly tripled in many categories.
Even so, organic search still sends more traffic than all AI platforms combined.
95%: ChatGPT Users Also Use Google
Of the 494M ChatGPT users measured by Similarweb, 461M also used Google. Search has 3.3B average monthly unique visitors versus 655M for AI chatbots.
At the same time, only 6.8% of ChatGPT answers in the U.S. contained an external link. AI is not replacing Search yet, but it is also not a reliable promise of referral traffic today.
From 2.2% to 37.8%: The Meta-WebIndexer Spike
Meta-WebIndexer rose from about 2.2% of AI crawler traffic in mid-July to 37.8% on August 9, an increase of about 17x in less than a month.
The rise coincided with reports that Meta is building its own web search index. Broad blocking could therefore exclude a site from future visibility in Meta AI, Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp.
43%-48%: AI Overviews Are Becoming the Norm
Similarweb measures AI Overviews in about 43% of searches and Semrush Sensor about 48%, versus about 13%-20% a year earlier.
+71%: AI Overviews on Commercial Queries
Semrush recorded a 71% increase in AI Overviews on queries with commercial intent over six months. In finance, the increase reached 231%, while purely transactional queries saw a small decrease of 5%.
Google is gradually shifting AI Overviews from informational queries to funnel stages where product comparison happens.
1B Gemini Users – 63% Use Voice
Google announced that Gemini surpassed 1B monthly users, with 63% using voice. In Gemini Live, about one in five interactions includes camera or screen sharing.
Voice and multimodal queries mean that a larger share of commercial research happens without necessarily producing measurable organic traffic.
8.4x: Google Is the #2 Domain in AI Mode Citations
AI Mode citations to google.com increased 8.4x in about two months, mainly via Google Business Profiles and Product Knowledge Panels.
For local businesses, GBP, reviews, photos, and correct categories matter more. For e-shops, the same applies to product feeds, schema, pricing, and availability.
92.4%: ChatGPT Dominates AI Referral Traffic
An analysis of 6.77M LLM sessions shows total AI referral traffic nearly increased tenfold over 19 months, and 92.4% comes from ChatGPT.
At the same time, 28.8% of ChatGPT referrals land on internal search pages. A site’s internal search quality is now part of the acquisition experience.
Only 11% of Brands Appear Across All Three Major AI Models
A study across GPT-4o, Gemini 2.5 Flash, and Claude Sonnet 4.6 found that only 11% of brands are mentioned by all three.
There is therefore no single AI visibility score that accurately describes the picture: reporting needs a model-by-model breakdown. Third-party validation was a core trait of brands that outperformed.
22.4% of AI Overview Traffic Is Recorded as Direct
An analysis of 51,200 tracked events found that 22.4% of traffic from AI Overviews is incorrectly shown as Direct in GA4.
Evaluating AI visibility only through Organic Search therefore underestimates its contribution. Proper tracking is needed before drawing conclusions.
Marketing, Business & Management News
96% Recognition, 89% Invisibility: AI Knows the Brand but Doesn’t Recommend It
A study of 175 brands across eight AI platforms found that systems describe 96% correctly when asked directly, but 89% never appear in category research queries.
Third-party mentions and referring domains are more strongly linked to AI visibility than the content of the site itself. For the Greek market, digital PR, Skroutz, BestPrice, directories, and industry media gain greater weight.
CMOs Still Don’t Connect AI Visibility to Sales
Marketers are investing in AI visibility tools, but they still lack a reliable way to connect presence in ChatGPT and AI Overviews to revenue. They combine AI share metrics, referral traffic, branded search, and media mix modeling.
The measurement gap remains a key challenge, and the approach is necessarily probabilistic and omnichannel.
HBR: The AI Cost Shock Is Coming
Today’s enterprise AI usage relies heavily on subsidized or included pricing. Providers are gradually moving toward usage-based charging, making budgets harder to forecast.
Companies need to know which AI features they use today with no marginal cost and what will happen if those start being charged per use.
HBR: AI Creates Brand Debt
The concept of brand debt describes the loss of trust, relevance, and consistency when a company’s experiences drift away from customer expectations. AI can accelerate this drift, scaling inconsistency along with efficiency.
For retailers and e-shops, an audit of AI-generated touchpoints for brand voice and accuracy is needed, not just production speed.
HBR: The Value of Physical Stores in the Digital Economy
Research shows that physical stores can create value beyond the sales directly attributed to them. Experience-focused stores can even increase total revenue while online purchases decline.
Evaluation should therefore be done at the level of the overall customer journey and not exclusively based on store sales.
HBR: Responsible AI Becomes a Growth Strategy
The same AI capabilities that enable personalization can create issues of surveillance, discrimination, and manipulation. Trust thus turns into a competitive advantage.
With the AI Act and GDPR, AI governance can be treated not only as a compliance cost but as a trust element a brand can communicate.
