Facts, Stats & Latest News from SEO, Search & Marketing Industry [October, 2026]

October arrived with the slowest spam update rollout of the year, which completed on October 8 after nearly 14 days, and with Google once again changing the way AI Mode and AI Overviews link out to sites.

Also, ChatGPT appears to be stripping UTMs from its links, so the visits you think you lost may be hiding in direct.

The number of the month is 83%: that many branded searches in the U.S. now show an AI Overview. Before reacting to any number this month, make sure you’re measuring it correctly.

    The FACTS

September 2026 Spam Update: The biggest rollout of the year completed after nearly 14 days

Google completed the September 2026 spam update on October 8, after starting it on September 24. The Search Status Dashboard logs a duration of 13 days and 16 hours. By comparison, the March update lasted 19.5 hours, June a little over two days, and August two days and 16 hours.

Google did not clarify what exactly the update targeted, only that it was applied globally and across all languages.

The first numbers come from third parties, so read them with caution. Diib, which has 32,569 sites connected to Google Analytics, saw organic traffic drop from 34% to 31% from September 24 to 26 compared to the previous week, while 10% of sites lost at least half their traffic. These are vendor data and cover only the first three days, not the final outcome.

For Greek companies: don’t judge the update before two weeks have passed since it ended. Compare clicks and impressions before September 24 with the period after October 8, add an annotation in GSC, and if the drop persists, look at exactly which pages and which queries lost traffic before changing anything.

AI Mode and AI Overviews: More links and a new section with official sources

On October 15, Hema Budaraju, VP Product Management at Google, announced five changes in how AI answers link to sites. Inline links are increasing significantly and are placed higher up in the answer. News carousels are expanding to more countries and languages, while creators’ names in video results become clickable and lead to their Search profiles.

Google says usage of Preferred Sources has increased more than 7x since the start of the year. This indicates where the market is heading: the user chooses which sources they trust, and the AI prioritizes them. The announcement includes no click numbers, so we still don’t know how much traffic the new links drive.

Site Migrations: John Mueller says they can take more than 4 months

On October 13, SEJ relayed John Mueller’s response in a case reported on Reddit. A site changed domains in early 2026, traffic recovered by April, and four months later Google brought the old domain back into the results. More than 5,000 pages on the new domain moved into Crawled, Not Currently Indexed status, and impressions fell from about 5,000 per day to 20 per week.

The numbers come from the owner and have not been verified.

Mueller said it can take more than four months for a change of address to be fully processed and recommended declaring in Search Console both the www and the non-www versions—something Google has now added to its guidelines.

For Greek companies planning a rebrand or a new domain: don’t promise management a recovery within weeks.

Helpful Content Guidelines: New chapter on the main content

According to Marie Haynes’ analysis on SEJ (October 6), Google’s Creating helpful, reliable, people-first content guide now has a separate section for the main content, meaning the material that directly serves the page’s purpose, such as an article, a calculator, a tool, or a video.

The section emphasizes the effort behind the content, originality backed by data or tests that aren’t already in the results, experience, and accuracy. Fake personas and misleading bylines are characterized as signs of low quality.

For Greek companies: open the ten pages with the most organic traffic and see whether the truly useful part is immediately visible or buried under introductory text. If there are bylines without a real author, fix them now. Haynes’ prediction of a new core update is her own assessment and not a Google announcement.

Universal Cart: A shared cart in Google and Gemini, for now only in the U.S.

On October 15, Google launched Universal Cart in the U.S., a shared cart across Search and the Gemini app. Users save products from multiple retailers, enable alerts for price drops or restocks, see promo codes, and pay with Google Pay or get transferred to the retailer’s site.

The announcement does not mention Europe or Greece, so we don’t know when it will arrive. The key point is the direction: the purchase starts—and may finish—before the user visits your site. We still don’t know where Google pulls the cart data from, but Merchant Center remains the obvious source.

For Greek e-shops: keep the Merchant Center feed accurate in pricing, inventory, and shipping details from now on, because the same data is likely to power these new purchase touchpoints when they arrive.

    The STATS

83% of brand-name searches in the U.S. now show an AI Overview

Ahrefs measured that on September 29, 2026, AI Overviews appeared in 82.91% of U.S. desktop results for branded keywords. The study is based on 232.8M crawls from July through September, with the share rising from 61.3% in July to 65.1% in August and 73.3% in September.

For Greek companies: it’s no longer a given that a user who types your name will see your site first. Search your brand name and read what the AI answer says. If it contains errors or relies on third-party sources, first fix your About Us pages. Your profiles on LinkedIn and Google Business Profile also need a review.

31,000 fewer visits per day from ChatGPT and 26,000 more in direct

Cedric Huesler of Adobe analyzed about 500 pages that had more than 5% of their visits coming from ChatGPT and compared October 9–13 with the previous week. Traffic from ChatGPT fell by about 31,000 visits per day, while direct increased by about 26,000 on the same pages.

According to Search Engine Land (October 15), ChatGPT’s links appear to no longer carry utm_source=chatgpt.com, which OpenAI introduced in June, and to open in a way that hides the referral. The change was observed after the release of GPT-6.

OpenAI has not confirmed that the change is intentional, and the analysis does not prove that every lost referral has the same cause. About two-thirds of the pages that lost ChatGPT traffic saw an increase in direct, while the new direct visits show similar behavior to the older ChatGPT visits. So it’s more likely an attribution issue than a real decline.

Search traffic fell by 7% in the same sample, in line with broader trends.

20.7% of sites stay in place when Google distorts a SERP, versus 88.5% under normal conditions

Nozzle, an enterprise rank tracking company, published on October 10 an analysis of 63.1M SERPs from 49 countries, covering August 20 through October 9. It claims that since September 13, 8.0% of SERPs were poisoned, versus 0.17% at baseline.

In poisoned SERPs, organic results retained only 20.7% of the sites from the previous result, versus 88.5% at baseline, while tracked sites dropped out of the top 10 in 58.6% of cases, versus 2.7%.

This story continues September’s thread, when we wrote that Google is blocking scrapers and tracking tools. The new analysis says Google doesn’t reject the request but returns a full page with incorrect results. Nozzle describes it as a measure against AI scraping.

23% of consumers trust recommendations from AI assistants, while 75% of marketers plan to increase their investment in AI tools

Media Reactions 2026 by Kantar, published on October 2 with participation from 800+ senior marketers and 23,000 consumers, highlights a gap. 75% of marketers plan to increase investment in AI assistants in 2027, while only 32% of consumers use them to research brands and just 23% trust their recommendations.

The channel is growing faster than trust in it. A marketer who follows the budget rather than consumer behavior risks paying for visibility that doesn’t turn into traffic/revenue.

    Marketing, Business & Management News

HBR: AI benefits people unevenly—more those who have a system

Christopher Stanton (Harvard Business School), Justin Shriber, and Simon Rudat write in HBR (October 8) that estimates of AI’s impact diverge: it either narrows performance differences or widens them. They argue that benefits are distributed unevenly and go to those who build systems around their strengths, and that the critical question is what will be automated, what will be augmented, and what will remain human.

For Greek companies: write your team’s tasks in three columns—automation, augmentation, and human judgment—before buying the next tool.
